Well, if you look at the packaging the only special feature is the trailer. (Woo hoo! It's about time!)

I'm not sure if they're finally releasing it in its deserved widescreen because the packaging doesn't say one way or the other. (The antici....pation is killing me!)

But it will have 2 English language tracks! And BOTH in 2.0! (Man, you guys really went all out!) Well, to give the studio credit, one of the tracks is lossless HD, so you won't have to listen to all that horrible hissing noise you will (not) hear (anyway) on that rusty old Dolby Digital track.

So let's review all the great features missing from this disk:

No commentary track.
No documentaries.
No interviews.
No French or Spanish language tracks.
(But there are French and Spanish
subtitles for the kids to enjoy
reading)
Nada. Zero. Zilch. Zip.
And the trailer. (Haaaaaleluja!)

Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. Two of the greatest film actors of the 20th century in the greatest movie of their twilight years and this is all the respect they get?

Quest for the Sea Complete Series (4 DVD Set)

I've waited to have this become available on Amazon. I wrote the company, no response, etc. Finally, it's available.

This series tracks two modern families who go 'back in time' to a remote area in Newfoundland. The area has been settled for years, but many changes have taken place. The old way of life revolved around fishing. That provided an excellent living for decades, but changes in the fishing stocks and the growth of corporate fishing fleets has decimated the old way of life.

This series mixes in the experiences of the families with interviews with older men and women who still remember the old ways.

As usual, there are people who really get into the swing of things, and others who just complain and moan. The teenage girl at first really misses the mall and her friends, but seems to finally see the value of family. One family views this as a chance to re-connect with family, with mixed results.

Overall, not the best I've seen (Pioneer Quest and Frontier House were more engaging), but definitely worthy of buying. It would be a good watch with the whole family, since children were included in this one.

Catch More Smallmouth Bass & Walleye

The second DVD about fishing that I know exists and consequently own. This is in contrast to the DVD "Fishing with John" a serious DVD about walleye and smallmouth bass fishing. The video quality is well.. video (not to bad) but appereantly overexposed at some shoots. Two videos are on this discs which has proper DVD menus. One video is about walleye fishing in spring and summer and also goes in to midrange water fishing. The second video is about smallmouth fishing near spawn beds, pre spawn fishing and fishing after cold fronts. The music score sometimes got on my nerves since it was not always in tune. What I didn't liked about this DVD was the lack of detailed info about the fishing tactics and lures that where used. The guy who fished also used the word "this is a good fish" about a thousand times. I have seen other fishing programs about fishing with a lot more quality and content than this one. That said I must also say that this is the second fishing DVD around at this time and this is the best you will get now. The video quality is not to bad and the DVD menu's are easy to navigate.

I hope that some other companies will finally issue some proper fishing DVD's on the market (with some better quality please). I find it hard to believe that I am the only fishing nut waiting for this to happen.

A strange little film about the frontier that has always fascinated Americans: the sea, nature, the winter, and many other things that come along when you are isolated and lost in the big vast chasm this natural wilderness may look like along the coast of the state of Washington. To give come depth to the story, the film builds on the characters. A mother, singer by profession, drifter by family life, and her daughter, lost and unstructured by that life of no stability since any man has to be abandoned as fast as possible. Then the film throws in her/their legs a divorced middle aged man who was a fisherman but isn't anymore, who would like to have a peaceful life but cannot avoid being dragged into some shadowy and shady business by a half brother of his. Then the rest is details. The scenery is beautiful though not overused. The weather is chilly and we can feel it perfectly well. The anxiety, the fear, the panic now and then are perfectly present and lively. The daughter what's more is fantasizing some kind of diary left behind by some previous runaway abandoned escapee of some sort. The film though tries to stick to the rhythm of that life when it is stranded like this in no place nowhere and it is rather slow, maybe too slow. But apart from that it is a film you have to let yourself slip into without any resistance, including to the accent of this northern region of the US, somewhere between Seattle and Vancouver.

I started tying flies in Dunsmuir, CA when I was 12 years old. Local fly fisherman Ted Fay got me started and also showed me his fly fishing techniques when I used to join up with him on the Upper Sacramento River. (This was long before he became really famous). Well, I hadn't tied for many years and needed some refreshing. The "Hollywood Casting Couch" DVD got me up and going again accompanied by some great humor not found in other instructional books and DVD's. Complete and concise, I was tying my dry and wet fly patterns including the demonstrated Brown Hackle Peacocks and Hare's Ear Nymphs along with and my own old favorite patterns including wet/dry Grey Hackle Yellow, Zug Bug, Tellico and Montana Nymphs that are great for Sacramento River and creeks (and I can now find humor in my own rather frequent fly tying misadventures). Outstanding narration and camera work make this DVD set a must for all fly tyers. If you only buy one fly tying instructional DVD, this is the one!

So happy to see this finally come to dvd. I remember seeing this on Vhs when I was a young girl. I hated to see they had to add subtitles that were not quite true in translation. The moive is not hard to understand if you are realy paying attention. They are so many moives to watch, The Lunatic, Smile orange, Shottas, Klash, Third World cop, Dancehall Queen, and Belly. Any body know where I can get The Lunatic ? please let me know. I have seen it once in the UK and Have the book.

Nanook of the North (Criterion Collection Spine #33)

A great documentary of the Inuit or Eskimo people as they were called by Robert Flaherty. He actually had to make it twice. The film used then was highly flammable and caught fire as he was editing it while smoking. People smoked anywhere they wanted in the 20s too! Flaherty suffered burns in many parts of his body and had to recover before going back north. He had made copious notes of his previous film and was able to recreate most scenes again. Not your typical documentary now, but was at this time. Filmmakers were quite aware of having to make the film entertaining and interesting to watch. Not unlike today! The 20s was the heyday of anthropology and of documentary film so they went together nicely. Flaherty has made a spine-tingling film where the cold can be felt as well as seen. The lives of Nanook and his people is interesting and stunning.

This is one of my favorite movies, and I rented it on accident. I love eveything about this movie, espcially when she goes to Ireland.

The mystery seems pretty straight forward. A best-selling author loses her little boy in a drowing accident, her marriage (he wasn't the boy's father) fell apart, and her best friend found her a nice cottage where she could finish her book and have some time to heal.

She meets her neighbor, the lighthouse keeper, and she begins to take down walls, trust, and falls in love with him. Then she goes to he village and is told the lighthousekeeper killed himself 7 years earlier.

WHAT?? Is she crazy/delusional, is the small village trying to drive her away, is he a ghost??? The twists are awesome and I reccommend this movie to everyone!!!

This movie had some really great things going for it. The leading actors were at their best even as children they had great chemistry going on between them. It was a very sexy, stylish and well put together movie for the most part. The real down fall for me was the character played by Robert De Niro. I know this movie was based on the book by Charles Dickens but really De Niro just got in the way of the flow of the story from the very start to me. They really did not need him at all in this version of Great Expectations. He kind of messed it up for me.

In this video: a) the resolution is too poor to see any of the radar screen soft key labels; b)the demonstrator turns knobs the opposite direction from the narrator's instructions; c) when adjusting gain and filters nothing visible occurs on the screen to give the viewer feedback; d) the demonstrator touches the wrong key/knob and the finger walks to the correct one.

The video does not cover the ARPA function, but this is not revealed on the box. Altogether a waste. Money would have been better spent on lunch for a Furuno dealer.

The Silver Horde

THE SILVER HORDE is a remake of a 1920 silent photoplay. It's set in Alaska, where the novel's author Rex Lease spent five years as an unsuccessful Gold Rush prospector. The titled "horde" are salmon.

THE STORY:
Boyd Emerson (McCrea) and his pal Fraser (Hatton) explore Alaska's wilderness. They meet copper miner Cherry Malotte (Brent) and she puts together a business deal for Boyd, as operator of a salmon fishery. Cherry loves Boyd but his heart belongs to a Seattle deb named Mildred Wayland (Arthur). Mildred's jealous father (Pratt) and the owner of a rival fishing fleet (Gordon) try to sabotage Boyd's business. The ensuing confrontation has tragic results.

ALPHA VIDEO is a provider of vintage movies, serials and TV programs, many of which aren't available elsewhere. Their prices are fair, but so is transfer quality of some of their offerings. None have undergone restoration, yet the market scarcity of their material and an honest price make these DVDs a worthwhile purchase.

SHADOW OF CHINATOWN (1936) is another interesting ALPHA obscurity. This Bela Lugosi feature was originally a 15-part serial.

I highly recommend this movie to all who are favorably interested in Good Selkie/Mermaid movies. The plot is very well done following the myths and legends well. The setting in Ireland is also excellent. During the movie the Selkie speaks alittle about her world/home, and she uses her magic to help two humans in need. The movie also involves a love story.

We watched the 2-part, 3 hour version of this adaption of the Peter Benchley novel and just had a rollickin' good time! I'm a sucker for any giant creature movies, and every now and then I'm rewarded for my diligence in seeking them out with a really good production. Fortunately, there were many positive viewer reviews for this DVD (be sure to get this extended 2 disc version!) and so I'd like to throw in my enthusiastic two cents. Good cast, good story, good effects and an excellent music score add up to a very good movie. Check it out!

Darwin's Nightmare

The blurb on the DVD copy of this documentary poses some fundamental questions, including the role of environmental meddling (if you can call 'one man, with one bucket, in one afternoon' introducing the Nile Perch to the Lake Victoria ecosystem that); prostitution in the cargo business (in East Africa, we're used to seeing this on truck routes - seeing this on air routes brings in a whole new dimension), as well as issues of food security. Like I said, the blurb promises much, but fails to deliver on any of these issues, especially the environmental one, which is the key one, going by the title of the film. There are no experts to put things in context, and there is hardly a mention of any other fish in the Lake (including tilapia - perhaps the second biggest species fished in the Lake). There is no acknowledgement that Lake Victoria is shared by three countries (the other two being Uganda and my own Kenya, in which a lot of these issues are replicated) - meaning that the casual or uninformed viewer will assume that Lake Victoria is only a Tanzanian lake. As another reviewer stated, the main issues are dealt with in a supremely unsatisfying, almost casual way, which does a great injustice to the issues it sets out to address.

Secondly, and a more serious indictment to a documentary filmmaker, is that the translations from Kiswahili are mostly completely wrong, giving a much worse picture (especially of the streetkids) than is true from hearing the original statements these kids make. The translations are geared towards making the situation worse than it seems, and to me, destroyed a lot of the credibility of this film. If this is done with words, how much worse was it when it came to the selective pictures used? Let's face it, any documentary filmmaker will leave some things out and put others in, purely at their own discretion, but these should not be egregiously geared to skewing a picture totally out of kilter.

The style of the film is very evocative, and very emotional, so I would guess it served at least one purpose. One can argue whether not having a narrator enhances or takes away the effectiveness of the film, but my take is that that would be quibbling.

However, I think the blurb on the DVD (at least) raises some very important questions, and I would venture that these issues await a better filmmaker to hash them out.

I love Harrison Ford and Melanie Grffith, they are perfect together in this movie, not to mention Alec Baldwin, Sigourney Weaver and Joan Cusack.

This is a fine evocation of small town tensions and family dynamics with, from my non-Scicilian perception, a resonant truth to it. The most positive reviewers have laid out the scenario, the location shots, and acting qualities with aplomb. So no need to recapitulate. I've only seen Golino a few times, but this is a role that could have been conceived with her in mind. The ramifications of her undiagnosed highs and lows drive the narrative. There is some consensual component undeveloped in her character, a missing chink that renders her, if not savant, then caopable of placing her own interests above any one else's. The teenage daughter is more'adult' than her mother, and the sons and husband are alternatively seduced by her charms, annoyed by her eccentric irresponsibility, and anxious about her vulnerablity. She's a portrait of the puer personality. The machismo and protectiveness of the male actors is pure Scicilian( from my experience in these parts)and poignantly, engagingly communicated. The youngest boy delivers a memorably haranguing speech when interceeding in a blooming affair between his older sister and a raw police recruit, freshly assigned to the island; pure Scicilian! Elsewhere a reviewer mentions the film's poetic symbolic structure. Unless the viewer enters into this dimension, much of the tale will remain opaque. And, in this poetic thrall, I heartily agree with comments about the brilliant underwater concluding shot. Reborn as a goddess the community can accept her in a way that no Milanese therapist could explain.Excellent movie!

I was extremely disappointed with this DVD and subsequently returned it. One would hope that an instructional DVD would cover topics such as how to surf cast which is more difficult to learn from a book that can only present a sequence of photographs. Instead the information covered is actually better presented in Burnley's "Surf Fishing the Atlantic Coast". Information on how to identify good fishing spots and the equipment to use doesn't require a video format for effective presentation. The only action in the DVD are scenes of good ol' boys fishing the Carolina Coast--it was more of a travelogue from the fifties than an instructional video. Save your money.

I'm a new/wanna be fly tyer. this is a decent dvd, the host doesn't stutter or stammer as in a lot of home made dvds. there are some really good tips and the picture quaility is excellent. the company that makes the dvd replied to my emails within 24 hours. if they had made the dvd a little longer/added a few other flys, I would have given it 5 stars.

Nature: Crash - A Tale of Two Species

I think there's a clich'e that says, "When a butterfly flaps its wings here, a thunderstorm starts in China." This documentary marvels at how a South American bird depends upon horseshoe crab eggs in the Carolinas. If you like ideas about interconnections and dependency, then you will enjoy this.
I guess I could mention the allegory of the cave while I'm at it. Fishers were innocently using female horseshoe crabs as bait for eels. Unfortunately, this has caused a South American bird to face extinction.
Sometimes it's hard to watch green documentaries because they are so sad and doomsday-ish. However, this one wasn't, TO AN EXTENT. Once leaders learned of the birds demise, they banned or limited fishers' use of horsecrabs and it seems that the fishers have complied. This is so different from companies that don't want to lower global warming. This is different from car companies that don't want to make their products fuel-efficient. I recently saw a documentary about the Everglades and it suggested that Floridians want green lawns much more than they want to see alligators and manatees survive. I am glad that no humans seem to be putting effort into seeing this South American bird die.
Having said that, this documentary does reach a sad conclusion. I can't call this a feel-good work. This may make you bitter and say, "Well, why try to stop a tragedy if it's too late?!"
The work fascinated me in how it revealed how individuals can know sooo much about critters. Fishers could just look at a crab and tell its gender whereas I didn't see breasts or long hair, so I didn't think female. A scientist could describe harmed body parts of the bird just by knowing its weight.
I was always taught that sociobiology was a bad thing. But I felt good when I heard that more than one male horseshoe crab can breed with just one female. Think of all the male animals that fight other males to get busy, human males included! With this crab, everyone can go home happy!
The work marvels at how two animals thousands of miles apart could co-exist. This didn't surprise me as the relationship developed over eons. Perhaps the first migratory bird happened to eat some crab eggs, liked it, and poof!, history was made.

I was disappointed in this video. Too much time is spent with the crew and it's aircraft and not enough time doing the actual filming. Also, fast fowarding some of the scenery diminishes its beauty. Much of the scenery is also redundant as it appears that the aircraft is going over the same areas more than once. On the positive side, there is a segment on Lobster fishermen that is very interesting and worth watching.

The Godfather Part II - The Coppola Restoration

Two years after Francis Ford Coppola made an indelible mark on Hollywood with "The Godfather", he returned with writer Mario Puzo to add to the saga of the Corleones. Part II is an ambitious film - it cuts back and forth between two timelines. One tells the story of the original Godfather - Vito. This part relies heavily upon Puzo's original novel. The second part tells about Michael, Kay, Fredo and Tom Hagen starting about seven years after the end of the first film.

Essentially the entire cast returned for part II, with the exception of Marlon Brando. The cast for this film is augmented by Robert Deniro, who won the Academy Award for best supporting actor, and Michael V. Gazzo and Lee Strasberg, who were also nominated for the same award. Bruno Kirby, John Cazale, Robert Duvall and G.D. Spradlin could all have received the same nomination. Talia Shire returns as Connie Corleone, and she was nominated for best supporting actress.

We see in early scenes the young Vito Andolini circa approximately 1900, born in the town of Corleone, Siciliy. His father is murdered after insulting a local mafia chief and his brother Paolo is murdered during his father's funeral procession after vowing revenge. Vito is spirited to a ship headed for Ellis Island and an immigration official assigns Vito the surname of his Italian home-town rather than his father.

We see the rest of the family at their Lake Tahoe home about seven years after the end of the first movie, celebrating the first communion of son Anthony. Like the other films, this one opens with a large celebration that gathers the cast to allow the audience to become familiar with them prior to settling down to business with the Don.

Michael is planning a large deal in both Vegas and Havana, and he is eager to not let old New York contacts, represented by Gazzo as Frank Pentangili, interfere with his plans with Hyman Roth, played by Lee Strasberg.

When an assassination attempt floods Michael and Kay's bedroom with bullets, Michael realizes he had to be betrayed by someone very close to the family. He turns the family business temporarily over to Duvall's Tom Hagen while he takes a trip to try to save the big family deals and discover the identify of the betrayer.

The scene where Michael unexpectedly discovers the traitor is one of the most famous pieces of wordless acting in film history.

We see scenes of the early Vito, played as a young adult by young Robert Deniro, mixed with the scenes of Michael fifty years later. We see that Vito comes to the business by a sense of necessity, but uses his power as the Don with great human compassion, while Michael, who we know ten years earlier had no intention of joining the family business, becomes a more cruel Mafia Kingpin than his father.

The first two Godfather films are not only "The Standard" for films about organized crime: they are among the best films ever made. Period.

Barbara Stanwyck, Paul Douglas, Robert Ryan and Marilyn Monore: wow, not a bad leading foursome of actors! I bought this because it was labeled a film noir, and I am always willing to give them a chance. Plus, with this cast, it sounded good. It turned out to be only fair because it was more of a soap opera than a noir. I guess the presence of some amoral people and a lot of wise-cracking lines made it be considered "noir."

The "amoral" people were played by Stanwyck and Ryan, of course.....who else? They are effective in those roles, too, but they should be since those two fine actors played those roles on numerous occasions. Douglas plays the simpleton good guy who gets shafted by his wife Stanwyck who has an affair with Ryan.

Monroe and her boyfriend (played by Keith Andes) have a smaller role but are just as fascinating a couple, of not ore so than the leads. The final third of this movie didn't match up the first two-thirds or this would be rated at least a four-stars simply because of the great dialog in that first hour. There were so many good lines I couldn't count them all. I just wish it had stayed that way all the way thorough.

The fishing docks of San Francisco certainly was a different site, too, for a noir. To me, this should be simply classified as a "drama" or even "melodrama."

My friend insisted I watch this film and even gave me a copy as a present - knowing that I love NYC and funky movies. One night, after dinner, I sat and watched it end to end. I expected to fall asleep half way through it and man was I shocked when it held my attention for the whole film. Basically, it's about people in NYC fishing in the waters around the City. They come in all shapes, sizes, ages, and ethnic backgrounds. Men and women too. Really a diverse group.

I laughed. I learned things I didn't know. I enjoyed it completely. Can't ask more from a documentary can you?

Girls! Girls! Girls! is a 1962 musical comedy film starring Elvis Presley as a penniless fisherman who loves his life on the sea and dreams of owning his own boat.

The film was shot on location in Hawaii.
Nominated for Best Motion Picture - Musical at the 1963 ceremony. The winner that year was The Music Man.The soundtrack songs were recorded in March 1962 at the Radio Recorders Studios in Hollywood, California with the songs "Where Do You Come From" and "I Don't Want To" added to the music album released to coincide with the film's debut. The Leiber-Stoller title track was a hit for The Coasters in 1961 before being adapted for the Presley film. Besides the album itself, "Return to Sender" was released as a single and became a major hit for Elvis.
Several additional songs were recorded for the film and not released concurrently. This includes "Plantation Rock" which was not released until the 1980s (actor Rob Schneider himself a big Elvis fan, performed the song when he appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brien in 1996), "Mama", which appeared on an early 1970s RCA Camden compilation and "Dainty Little Moonbeams" which appeared in the 1990s. The songs performed by Stella Stevens in the film have yet to be commercially released.

This is a timeless classic which every afficionado of the 70s or Key West should own. The visuals and cinematography are stunning and they convey a certain sense of nostalgia for a bygone era. This is also amongst the first documentaries that captures the environmental spirit and dangers that haphazardous fishing can cause.

Most of the film is rather zen, with beautiful slow motion spreads of the Tarpon as they jump out of the water. Interlaced with those moments, you have interviews with various famous fishermen and literary minds and shots of the life and culture of Key West. The deep Floridian accents can be a little hard to follow at times, but one can't help but appreciate the charming sense of contentment with their surroundings the main protagonists display.

One particularly powerful scene displays a contrast between the style of life these fishermen and friends live in, and the beginning of the commercial touristy aspects of Key West.

Aside from that, the film is very nicely timed in the sense that its not too long and not too short and at the end of the day, one is left with a deeply satisfying experience that isn't spoiled by any modern holywood tradeoffs or forced political messages.

The Isle

I've always been a fan of Kim Ki-Duk's. I've reviewed most of his films and for some reason, I haven't reviewed my first experience from this outcast Korean director. Kim has been labeled an outcast because his films are methodical, violent and his style usually deals more on themes and imagery rather than its narrative. "The ISLE" (2000) is a beautiful film, emotionally violent, horrific and it defies a solid definition of genre. It is a story about obsession and the examination of relationships. I'll get right to the point: if you can't stand sequences of animal abuse and if you prefer a more direct form of filmmaking then "The Isle" may not be for you. Kim's films are usually for the esoteric few who appreciate and understand this method in filmmaking.

Hee-jin (amazingly beautiful Jung Suh, also known as Seo Jeong) is a supposedly mute boat keeper. She supplies bait and food to the relaxing fishermen in the lake by day, and at night, she sells her body to the selfsame fishermen. One day, a man named Hyun-Shik (Yoo-Suk Kim) arrives, who supposedly came to fish but he is a man on the run from the law and is actually considering suicide. Hee-jin grows curious with Hyun-Shik and seemed to have developed a fondness for him. She watches him from the shore when he finally decides to commit suicide and she intervenes. The two begin to form a strange bond that may be beyond our basic instincts.

The little fishing village is a perfect backdrop for writer/director Kim Ki-Duk's film that borders on being a twisted fable and a conventional horror film. Now, even with its scenes of violence and animal mutilation, it is not a horror film; rather, it is a drama that tackles violent and obsessive behavior full of emotional content in a very direct way. When Hee-jin becomes abused by the fishermen after having sex with her, she responds with a violent fury that almost seems psychotic when she takes her revenge. "The ISLE" has very limited dialogue, the two lead characters hardly speak to anyone but their actions more than speak for themselves. It also has the most disturbing sequences with a fish hook that I've ever seen.

The movie is an examination of relationships between men and women. Kim is very fascinated with gender and relationships so he puts this factor in center stage. The two actually have a "Lynchian" type love affair. When Hyun-Shik tries to force himself on Hee-jin and she refuses, she sends him a prostitute that he befriends and she becomes extremely jealous. The sex scene between the two is erotic but at the same time, twisted. The slightly psychotic Hee-jin transforms into a romantic one when she is in Hyun's presence. Actress Jung Suh is thoroughly convincing as her character swings from one emotional mood to the next. No wonder she has become renowned for her role in this film. As the unusual bond develops between the two, their attachment to each other grows, both physically and emotionally. When one is hurt, the other responds in kind. Enter the Fish Hook.

Kim also shows just how the marginalized world of the lake operate; each gender is dependent on one another. Men are fishermen, pimps, criminals and cops. Women clean and provide care, sex and amusement. Both sexes are also potential adulterers which gives them common ground. In this world, both men and women play typical roles, and while in this world, men are considered the stronger of the two, but they are also very reliant on women. Hee-jin provides the boat, the only means of transport, food, to clean and sexual services. The relationship between the two is dependent on one another. Men are rendered incomplete without women as are women are also fairly incomplete without men.

There are subtle metaphors in the film and the key images in the film are enhanced by stunning visual flair. The shots become frozen in time as certain key elements and themes are driven home by visual manipulation. The film is a little slower paced that allows the viewer to properly absorb its sequences. The film does feel a bit longer than it actually is because the camera lingers at times. The direction and storytelling depends on its imagery.

THE ISLE is a worthwhile film and has become among my favorites by Kim Ki-Duk. Those who prefer straight-forward storytelling will be alienated but those who love challenging cinema with an "art house" thought provoking style will be rewarded. Kim doesn't really explain the climax in a conventional manner and leaves it to the viewer's interpretation. Kim excels in the surreal that may frustrate viewers but his style is definitely powerful. The film is well balanced but requires patience in order to be appreciated. Those with the correct mindset will be rewarded with "The Isle".

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! [4 ½ - stars]

Note: The U.S. release is not the uncut edition with extended scenes of lizard and fish mutilation and an unexplained dog abuse. I own the uncut edition. Websites list the woman as Hee-jin but her name is never really mentioned in the film.

With a title like this I was excited to see what this DVD had to offer. This DVD spends a disproportionate amount of time watching the host fight fish! I watched this a second time because I was looking for... more. I actually found myself fast forwarding the fish fighting scenes to try to find some focus relevant to the title. Overall relative material to the title is not "beyond the basics". After watching the video you find yourself wondering if you somehow missed something. The video spends several minutes using white pointer arrows to indicate reading water, while watching the host fight fish is probably around 20 + minutes. Flyfishing DVD's are expensive and hit and miss. If you are truly curious... rent this one.

Matthew Barney: No Restraint

This certainly aint for viewers who are looking to be entertained. I spose since the days of Raphael and Co great visual art hasnt really been big with the box office-at least on the first take. Not saying that Barney is right up there but his ideas are pretty interesting and I suspect profoundly complex. It took me many years to finally figure out that the criticism around Joseph Beuys (one of Barneys main influences) was only getting the mans breadth of vision rarely and now the same thing seems to be happening with this guy. Basically he is a shaman, alchemist and rash sportsman. He doesnt have the European restraint (sorry) that characterises the continental tradition but he is on the mark when it comes to subject matter and novel angles-especially the whaleship film (The central subject of this doco) and his adoption of diverse petroleum products. Like Beuys, he wants to heal the growing rift between the nature and humanity, materialism and psyche, East and West, sport and art , Cain and Abel. (From a materialist point of view this is just ridiculous and an unconscious skepticism will probably colour the experience of watching the film) He in effect goes into the belly of the whale and revisits history with some surprising twists. If your interested in art that will still be discussed in years to come- it addresses the root cause of fashion rather than participating in it- then this is the man...as Barney has said somewhere, its best to see the drawings then the doco and then watch the film...but even then the latter is challenging. Moreover the doco really is more an adjunct to the greater body of the mans work and so needs to be considered in context. The is art for people who are serious about what art just might be able to do beyond entertainment. Its the kind of film that you have to work at...I found that I had to read a lot of stuff on Beuys, and others in the arena, see the film which is the subject of the doco and then ponder a whole lotta other stuff...synchronicites to do with Pearl Harbour, Melville and Whale boat attacks ..and so on...I think great art just keeps unveiling the depths long after the others are forgotten...Difficult but worth it.

On Golden Pond (Special Edition)

I didn't hate this movie, but there is really nothing overly special about anything in it. The characters are cliché ridden and the acting, while universally solid, rarely transcends just that. There is nothing here that begs to be remembered really, and the generic and unrealistic way in which the plot is developed (and quite frankly, the lazy ending) is almost frustrating beings that the center moral concerning the fear of aging deserves a better canvas.

The film focuses on a elderly couple, Norman and Ethel Thayer, as they retreat to their cabin on Golden Pond to celebrate Norman's eightieth birthday. Norman is a crotchety old man (cliché) and Ethel is his feisty spirited wife (cliché) and so the two of them make for an interesting pair (or I should say, they would make for an interesting pair had this formula not been used in every movie). Their wayward daughter Chelsea decides to drop by to introduce her parents to her new boyfriend and ask them for a favor. She wants them to watch her boyfriend's son Billy Ray for a month while they slop away to Europe. She claims the boy will be miserable, but it's obvious that she will be miserable if the boy is with them.

What happens next is a `quote-unquote' heartwarming tale of an elderly man finding his youth in the eyes of a young boy who just needed a little love. Norman loses his hard edge when given the opportunity to bond with Billy Ray, and Billy finally finds someone to take an interest in him.

Something like that.

I had a hard time really taking this film all that seriously because it wasn't very serious. The subject and the issues dealt with are really very lightly handled, nothing ever truly sinking in to feel even remotely genuine. I especially found the `father/daughter' situation to be almost brushed under the rug, even though it's boasted as one of the films core situations.

The end resolve feels lazy to me.

This movie won Oscars for both Katherine Hepburn and Henry Fonda, and while they are serviceable here (and Katherine is actually quite hilarious throughout) there is nothing in these performances that demands to be rewarded, especially when you have much better performances nominated alongside these ones (Diane Keaton is extraordinary in `Reds' and Dudley Moore is comedic gold in `Arthur'). I can't say that these wins anger me, because they are not `bad', but they should not have garnered gold, that year or any for that matter. Even more baffling is the nomination for Jane Fonda who does nothing but cry, and even those tears are unconvincing. Her character arch is undeveloped and unfinished and thus incomplete and so her performance suffers from lack of real material.

The only performance I would consider as nomination worthy is that of Doug McKeon, who actually takes young Billy Ray and makes him a believable child with real issues and a halfway believable resolve.

So, what do I mean by all the `saccharine melodrama' and `forced sympathies' talk? Well, to be brutally honest, this film is a syrupy mess. Any actually sentiment is lost amidst the films pulpy atmosphere. Everything, from the overly clichéd characters to the sappy soap opera music begs the listener to fall in love with the surface characters, but the film fails to delve any deeper into who they really are. In the end, this feels like a rather pointless film that fails to deliver anything more than standard or average entertainment. It could have been so much better than it was had the script not been so predictably average.

Received a red "Mike" train and coal tender. Never heard of that one, but it seems to be of good quality, made of wood and plastic. My son likes it.
The video is one of the older ones w/ Ringo Starr. The production quality isn't as good as the more recent Thomas videos and Ringo is not one of the better narrators. He doesn't seem to have the warmth or the ability to keep the kids attention as well as others. It sounds like he is just reading a book out loud. Overrall, w/ the train, this is a decent value, but not great.

This is a very interesting DVD. It is very short, only about 24 minutes. The video follows a group of backpackers in Tokyo,during their stay. This DVD show some great sites, such as the Tsukiji Fish market, the Edo-Tokyo Museum, Yasukuni Shrine, and Akihabara and is worth the money for a small glimpse at what you can see in Tokyo. You will not learn very much about planning travel to Tokyo, get a guidebook for that.

The Great Canoe Fish is a very poor adoptation of Paul Hutchen's literary classics. First, the film failed to have ANY CENTRAL PURPOSE. There was no genuine moral theme! Second, the WARDROBE was quite marginal. You have clothing from different time periods shown in the film. In fact, I would have no idea (based on this film) whether the story was to have occured in the early 1900s or early 2000s.

Third, the EDITING and CINOMATOGRAPHY were also most disagreeable. One instance I particularly remember was when the 'gang' (and I use that word loosely) engaged in a friendly waterfight. The members of the gang (fully dressed) get their clothing all filthy. However, an hour or two later, their clothing is without dirt or wrinkles. Personally, I find these types of inconsistences intolerable.

Finally, if you want to purchase this film for your young children (age 5 to 10) to view, the film certainly is quite 'G' rated. However, for anyone older than ten, the film will likely be a confusing bore.

The absolute worst reef documentary I've ever seen. As short as it is, a lot of time is wasted on silly pretentious landside footage. The main feature of the program is poorly lit underwater footage showcasing Ron and Valerie destroying coral and harassing marine life while exhibiting sloppy, careless diving skills. The university of Minnesota should be embarrassed to put their name on this. Unbelievable! To top it off, we're expected to sit through not one, but TWO obligatory "shark shock" scenes. During the stupid "shark shock," be sure to have the remote handy to turn the thundering noise down or brace yourself for a headache.

The Incredible Mr. Limpet

I bought this as a family move based on all the high reviews. We sat down to watch it last night as a family and it seemed to take a long time for the movie to go anywhere. My daughters we bored and running off after 10 minutes because it wasn't keeping their attention. If you don't already know, Don Knotts' character turns into a fish after wishing he was one and then later on helps the US Navy find U boats. The animation is pretty boring, but since it was made in the 60's, I should have expected it. The acting seemed to be over done by everyone but Knotts. Is the story line unbelievable? Yes, but aren't all animated movies? My husband and I had a few good laughs but the kids gave up on the movie long before it ended. Not sure if we'll be watching it again therefore I wouldn't recommend you buying it unless you've seen it. Rent it first and see if this is a movie you and something your family would enjoy.

Flipper's New Adventure

Sandy Ricks (Luke Halpin) is home alone when he gets the news. The Ricks' home has been leased from the Federal Government, and they need it back. Sandy has until tomorrow to move out. Unfortunately, he also has to say goodbye to Flipper.

But Sandy is not willing to go along with it. He runs away from home and finds a deserted island where he and Flipper can live. It's got fresh water, plenty of food, and a cave where the two can hide if anyone comes near.

Unfortunately, it's not as deserted as Sandy first thought. Some escaped convicts have landed on the island, but they escape marooning a woman and her two daughters instead. Can Sandy help them without giving away his presence? What about the father of the family who is being held prisoner by the convicts? And will Sandy's father Porter (Brian Kelly) ever find his son?

I'll admit that I was disappointed in the original Flipper movie. I felt it dragged. This one is slow in spots, but it is much more entertaining. The story moves forward at a mostly steady pace with just the occasional slow scene. There's more action and adventure in the climax this time around, too, which helps. Granted, there are some major plot gaps (Sandy helps the trio that much and they never suspect?), but I found them easy to overlook.

I noted with the first movie how different it was from the TV series. This movie acts as a bridge. It mentions that Sandy's mother has died but just in passing. It also sets up Porter Ricks' new job as a park ranger by having him at a training facility at the beginning of the film.

I'm glad I gave this second movie a try because it proved to be a much better film then the original. It will easily entertain kids and the young at hearts.

Hokey; amateurish; low, low, low production values, etc., etc. But what a kick! All the info you need is right there, reality check about the 'quitos, rain, bears, lodge traffic, and all. It is clear the producer/anglers favor kings and they horse 'em hard to get 'em to jump for the camera, but they cover the river and the runs and native fish well. These DVD's are excellent for the real world demonstration of what its like on river in real time. They can be a bit repetitious but that tends to be because they are shot sequentially as the float progresses-- fish kings at two creeks in succession and that's what you see. The only things missing are the adrenaline 'shakes' between hookups. Oh, and here's an old Eel River "bottom bouncing" trick; instead of cutting up pencil sinkers, pinch a string split shot on a 6 lb. test dropper (or 1/2 test main line) and add or remove to depth desired; a snagged split shot pulls off dropper plus you don't end up with a pocket full of too short pencils.

You don't NEED this video to fish the Yellowstone area, but it helps. It is especially useful for residents of the area who are able to fish here year round. It breaks down so many of our local hatches, including when to look for the bugs, how to fish a particular hatch, and what patterns are effective. If I'm fishing an area around Yellowstone that I am unfamiliar with anytime from March to November, I pop in this DVD, navigate to the appropriate chapter and watch it as I tie flies for the expedition. Highly recommended.

Working far, far away, in a country that can not offer any fly fishing destination I was very eager to at least relax by these DVD's (Vol 1&2). Oh my, oh my.... Are there people out there believing that the time has stopped? The production is, to put it mildly - mediocre and I almost have a feeling that it is a collection of amateur tapes.
I have actually seen something even worse ("Fly fishing Tail waters") but it was a close shave. Sorry mates, look at productions form NZ, Sweden, Norway and learn how to make a professional fly-fishing feature.

Then when he does hook up, he has the drag set so light a small Red takes him to the backing on a 8 weight. I don't need to buy a video to see what I saw on this one. Plus, there's something wrong about an ad for a reel in the middle.

The guide was very good thus the 1 star.

Review of Pike on the fly

This is a good video. It is a good inexpensive place to start. I would give it a B-. It is an In Fisherman production with Larry Dahlberg. One of my disappointments, was I really looking for Barry Reynolds. I did email Amazon but they had no more info on the video so I hope this helps. Most of the fishing on this video is in Canada. I am guessing, but the horse flies on the camera lens are so thick and the pike are all 50 inches , it just has to be north of 60 degrees. He goes over the locating of pike pretty fast but does a good job of demonstrating a light deer hair diver fly. One weakness is if I didn't know where and when to fish pike in my area I would be a little lost, even with all the great, `how to' info. It is fun to watch , lots of pike action and the information is acurate in my experience.

Have you ever watched a program and thought..."I sure would like to do that". Well this Belize fly fishing program is one of those shows that grabs you and makes you want to go there.

What's amazing to me is how the Watt's, can produce a video that is so well done and only sell it for $19.95. Obviously they're not getting rich, or they sell an aweful lot of videos!

Anyway the fishing in the program is first rate and the tour of the ruins and Belize city is a nice counterpoint to the entire program. I'd highly recommend this show to anyone traveling to Belize, wheether for fly fishing or just for tourism without the fly fishing.

"Surf Fishing With T.J. & Joe" is definitely geared more towards the novice surf-fisherman. Basics such as reading surf, cast netting and rigging simple tackle are covered briefly yet adequately. A little more in depth description of alternate tackle and techniques would be welcome, but the methods covered will definitely help you catch several species of fish from the surf. This video will get you started on your way and looking for more!

The video continues to follow TJ and Joe to the beach, where several varieties of common surf fish are caught and released. A few small, and a few nice-sized fish to whet your appetite as to what you might luck into at the beach. Overall, it's a nice teaser to entering the world of surf fishing. I'd recommend this video to someone just learning how to surf fish, or as a "refresher" to the person who goes surf fishing once or twice a year while on vacation. For someone a little more versed in surf fishing, it may seem lacking, but remember, everyone has to start somewhere.

This program is also offered in a DVD set with updated information since the original VHS 3M production ~20 years ago. Despite the age of the program, this information isn't "old". The program is full of sound usable information that is well presented in that the techniques discussed, which include planning, tackle, techniques and what to do if the first effort falls short, are illustrated with real life examples on the stream.

There is reference to a "Guide Book" that came with the original 3M program which is now out of print. I haven't seen the book but if you come across one, please lend it to me, I'd love to see it.

If you study this program and the next one in the series, Advanced Fly Fishing for Pacific Steelhead - Lani Waller 3M(also available in the DVD set referenced above), you will be well schooled on how to make it happen for you.

"Fishing With Gandhi" is one of the most amazing films I have ever seen. This low budget wonder follows the adventures of Danno, a troubled hitchhiker, and his road trip with perpetual slackers Roy and Gil. Significant plot point revolve around badminton, puppy diseases, and wrestling moves such as the "Brazilian Guillotine" and "Fishing With Gandhi," which Roy and Gil demonstrate with aplomb to hapless Danno.

Believe it or not this film harkens back to "Hamlet", in that Danno is upset that his uncle has taken advantage of his father's recent (possibly suspicious?) death and married his mother, while Roy and Gil are near perfect Rosencrantz and Guildenstern analogs. I know this sounds insane, but I didn't make it up: I found it out from the director's commentary. After I thought about what was said, re-watched the film, and skimmed my copy of "Hamlet", I had no choice but to agree, which added dramatically to the deliciously subtle humor of the film for me.

The cast is letter perfect and small details are done extremely well: I was especially amused by Christina Milano's portrayal of "Bronte", the weird Ophelia of the film who becomes seemingly more demented (as in "Hamlet") as the movie goes on. I especially love her scene where she breaks down into hysterics on recalling a nature documentary in which a water buffalo crosses an alligator infested river. She says that she needs to "helicopter" above the pain. Her companion responds "Can you talk from the helicopter?" Her answer, of course, is "Sure, I'm hovering above the pain right now." Which elicits from her companion the considerate, yet hilarious, line "Do you want to hover by yourself for a while?" Nuanced dialogue like this peppers the film, and makes it an absolute treat to watch in comparison to over-promoted Hollywood productions.

The DVD has a lot of extra features including a wonderful commentary track, extensive outtakes, a director's introduction (which I loved), the theatrical trailer, and a wonderful animated short featuring Roy and Gil in the psychiatrist's office. Their description to the psychiatrist of the medications they are currently taking is priceless.

This movie has a lot of subtlety to it, and is viewable on a number of levels. I recommend watching it as a straight comedy first, then watch for increasing nuance with further viewings. It is truly a film like no other, and I recommend it highly. If you can, try to find a copy of the even rarer Roy and Gil movie, "Cow Monkey", in which they pursue bigfoot.

"Fishing With Gandhi" isn't for everyone, but for the people it's intended for it is a wonderful experience.

Never having gone Fly Fishing, I thought this video would "turn me on" to this sport I've heard so much about. It had the OPPOSITE effect! This video focuses on all the wrong things to get someone started, and interested, in Fly Fishing. Instead of focusing on the natural beauty associated with the sport, it provides too much detail about the nitty gritty of knot tying, fly selection, leeaders, lines, etc......just enough to "turn me off". I was ready to hit the "rewind" button after just ten minutes of viewing, and try to improve my golf game instead!

These strange cable-TV show episodes showcase edgy actors, elusive fish, quirky dialogue, exotic locales, and John Lurie's unusual sense of humor and musical stylings. There is so much to admire and laugh at: the deadpan alpha male bonding stream of hyperconscious bantering, the faux pompous narration, the uber cool slacker sensibility, and the clever, unorthodox scripting and filming. Two humor highlights: the soaring vocals and helpfully subtitled inane lyrics accompanying a ritual "fish dance" in episode 3 and the ending of episode 4, in which the narrator gravely intones that the host and his guest have died of starvation.
